Assistant Professor Claire Roberts on Ian Fairweather

ACARI was very pleased to facilitate a small part of Assistant Professor Claire Roberts' research into the work and life of Scottish-Australian Modernist Ian Fairweather (1891-1974). Fairweather was deeply influenced by Chinese art and culture, and even translated Chinese texts into English. ACARI President, Dr Damian Smith introduced Claire to Mr Norman Sterling who visited Fairweather at his 'hut' on Queensland's Bribie Island. Claire's interview with Mr Sterling along with documents from Sterling's time with Fairweather informs the penultimate chapter of Claire Roberts' new book, Fairweather and China, published in 2021 by the University of Melbourne's Meigunyah Press. Claire is Associate Professor, Art History, in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne.
