In November 2018, 11 students from different schools at RMIT University in Melbourne took a photography studies tour to the United States of America, led by School of Art photography lecturer Bronek Kozka. The cities they visited included Chicago, Rochester and New York.
Images, videos and journals were produced during the trip as reflections of the participating artists’ observations and thoughts. Interestingly certain themes emerged in those images that suggest collective reflections. For instance, architectural lines and city colours emerged as prominent points of interest, while specific areas of fascination or ‘personal intrigue’ are also detectable. Additionally, scenes that are quintessentially ‘American’ were irresistible to many of the photographers.
For so short a sojourn, the photography studies tour proved entirely fruitful. New bodies of work were developed, Abigail Assender’s photograph Stop! Anvil Time, 2018 was selected for the prestigious 2019 Eyes on Main Street Festival in North Carolina, and the results of the project are captured in the exhibition ‘American Impressions’.
