The Art of Zhou Xiaoping in Aboriginal Australia

Zhou Xiaoping is a Chinese artist who arrived in Australia in 1988. But unlike so many émigré Chinese artists who gravitated to city centres, Xiaoping travelled in an entirely different direction. Setting metropolitan possibilities aside, he ‘went bush’ heading to some of the more remote Aboriginal communities across the Top End of Australia.

In this new exhibition, ‘Convergence: The Art of Zhou Xiaoping in Aboriginal Australia’, a selection of paintings opens a window into Xioping’s experiences in Aboriginal Australia. Also included are collaborative paintings developed by Zhou Xiaoping with renowned Aboriginal artist Johnny Bulunbulun.

According to Aboriginal elder, the late Dr Joe Gumula from Elcho Island “Chinese and Aboriginal arts and cultures meet in Zhou Xiaoping’s artworks. It is generating a new aesthetic while telling a story in Australia.”
